Why Operational Experience in Superyacht Builds Matters From Day One

Operational experience in superyacht builds is most valuable long before a vessel reaches the water. It belongs at the point where specifications are being negotiated, layouts remain flexible and practical knowledge can still influence the decisions that will define life onboard.


By delivery, many of the most consequential choices have already been fixed. A tender that cannot be launched safely in modest swell, a bridge with compromised sightlines or a service route that brings crew and guests into conflict may never have appeared problematic on a rendering. Once the yacht is complete, however, those decisions become part of its daily reality.


For Occam Marine co-founders Lee Stevenson and Giles Frankal, the difference between a yacht that looks complete and one that is genuinely ready to operate comes down to experience. Both spent decades at sea before moving into yacht construction and consultancy, bringing with them a clear understanding of what happens after the drawings have been approved, the contracts signed and the vessel handed over.


The Cost of Arriving After the Decisions Are Made

Two years before delivery may sound early in the life of a superyacht project. In practical construction terms, it can already be too late to make meaningful operational changes.


Stevenson experienced this during his final new-build project as a captain. By the time he joined, the major structural and design decisions had been made. Hot work was no longer welcome, the schedule could not absorb further disruption and the appetite for additional cost had largely disappeared.


At that stage, the incoming operational team is expected to accept what has been built and find a way to make it work. The captain cannot arrive in front of the owner with a catalogue of design failures. The yacht has to begin operating, even when the crew are already compensating for limitations that could have been avoided earlier.


Tender handling provides a clear example. A tender garage can look exceptional in drawings and remain technically compliant, yet still become difficult or unsafe to use when the yacht is sitting in a relatively small swell. For an owner who has invested in a yacht to enjoy the water with family and guests, being told that the tender cannot be launched directly diminishes the experience the vessel was built to provide.


“You don’t learn much from a perfect boat,” Frankal observes. The imperfect ones reveal where design assumptions meet real conditions and where knowledge gained at sea can prevent the same mistakes from being repeated.


Where Operational Experience in Superyacht Builds Changes the Outcome

The value of operational input rarely rests on one dramatic intervention. It is created through the accumulation of hundreds of smaller decisions.


Crew circulation, guest separation, storage, maintenance access, equipment selection, spare-parts planning and tender operations all contribute to how effectively a yacht can function. Each may appear to be a relatively modest detail during design, but together they determine whether the crew have a platform that supports them or one they must continually work around.


Occam Marine’s team brings a reported 260 years of combined operational experience into this process. That breadth matters because no single captain, engineer or project manager will have encountered every possible configuration or failure.


One person may recognise a problem with deck operations. Another may identify poor engineering access. Someone else may understand why a seemingly small change in layout could transform service flow. When that experience is introduced before the design becomes fixed, practical improvements can be incorporated without creating the cost and disruption associated with later changes.


The purpose of this input is not to compete with the designer or technical team. It is to help ensure that the yacht being created can be used, maintained and enjoyed as intended.


The Bridge Is Where Luxury Meets Function

Perhaps nowhere onboard is the balance between appearance and operation more exposed than on the bridge.


The bridge is a safety-critical working environment, but it is also a space owners and guests are often invited to visit. It must support navigation, communication and decision-making while remaining consistent with the visual language of the yacht.


“It’s got to be beautiful, but it’s got to work beautifully,” Frankal explains.


That distinction can be found in details that appear obvious until they are missing. Clear sightlines should allow the bridge team to see properly without relying unnecessarily on cameras. Window angles and surface finishes must minimise reflections and backscatter. Lighting needs to support night navigation without requiring a long sequence of controls every time the bridge is dimmed.


Integrated multifunction displays can create a clean, uncluttered console, but integration must not remove resilience. If a central display or section of the system fails, the bridge team still needs access to essential standalone equipment. A streamlined appearance cannot come at the cost of operational redundancy.


For Occam Marine, bridge development can include producing a full-scale, one-to-one console layout so the team can physically test reach, positioning and ergonomics. Multiple experienced operators can assess whether controls are accessible and whether the arrangement works before it becomes permanent.


The bridge is where design and function meet most visibly. Operational experience helps the two coexist without asking either to surrender its purpose.


Design for the Yacht, Not One Captain

The involvement of a build captain can bring valuable knowledge of the owner and the vessel’s intended use. It can also create the risk of designing around one individual’s previous experience.


A captain moving from a sailing yacht to a motor yacht, stepping up substantially in size or arriving from a vessel with a different operational profile may naturally bring ideas that worked well in the previous role. Those ideas may not be right for the new yacht.


A bridge should not become so personalised that it only feels intuitive to the captain present during construction. Over the life of the yacht, that space may serve several captains and bridge teams. The layout must be logical, ergonomic and adaptable enough to work for all of them.


The same principle applies throughout the vessel. A galley designed around one chef, an engine room arranged around one engineer or an interior created without experienced service input can become unnecessarily restrictive when personnel change.


Future-proofing a yacht means designing for the operation itself rather than the preferences of one person. The strongest solution is one that supports the owner’s intended use while remaining practical for the succession of professionals who will operate the yacht throughout its life.


The Advantage of Having Operated the Result

Stevenson and Frankal arrived in yacht consultancy through very different early careers.


Stevenson earned a law degree and spent five years in banking before returning to sailing. In 2002, he joined a 50-metre sailing yacht as a deckhand and second engineer, beginning approximately 20 years of operational yachting across sailing and motor yachts.


He became involved in six build projects, finishing his career at sea as build captain of the 90-metre Feadship Zen. By the time he moved ashore, he had experienced the entire cycle from construction and delivery to the daily reality of operating what had been built.


Frankal began in industrial catering design and large-scale event planning before travelling to Australia. There, he worked aboard sailing vessels in the Whitsunday Islands, combining deck work, engineering and cooking before earning his first commercial ticket and progressing into command.


After returning to Europe, he captained a 53-metre schooner around the world for nine years before moving into a succession of increasingly complex yacht build projects. It was through those projects that he and Stevenson developed the working relationship that would eventually lead to Occam Marine.


Their consultancy was therefore built from the delivery side backwards. They had operated yachts, managed crew, supported owners and lived with the consequences of earlier design decisions. When they moved ashore, they recognised the gap between technical build management and the operational reality awaiting the yacht after handover.


Every member of the Occam Marine team has worked on new builds. That shared background creates an environment in which decisions can be tested against experience rather than assumption.


Trust Has to Cross the Entire Project

Early operational involvement only works when there is trust between the owner’s representatives, shipyard, designers, technical specialists, captain and consultancy.


The purpose is not to restrict the designer or arrive with an inflexible list of demands. It is to explain why an operational concern matters, support it with real examples and help the wider project team find a solution that protects both function and aesthetics.


That requires diplomacy. The most effective contribution may begin by introducing an alternative, demonstrating how a similar arrangement performed on another yacht and allowing the idea to develop collaboratively.


It also requires careful project selection. Occam Marine assesses the client, shipyard, designers and principal decision-makers before taking on a project. The quality of the relationships surrounding the build matters because operational advice has little value if the team has no willingness to consider it.


The journey has to remain collaborative, and the finished yacht must reflect the standards of everyone whose name is attached to it. The desired result is straightforward: when the vessel has been delivered and the client is asked whether they would work with the consultancy again, the answer should be an immediate yes.


Operational Readiness Is the Owner Experience

Operational readiness can sound like a technical phase at the end of construction. In reality, it begins with the earliest decisions about how the yacht will be used, maintained and managed.


Occam Marine’s operational-readiness work includes crew structure, budgets, documentation, equipment, spare parts, compliance, maintenance systems and onboard procedures. These elements may sit behind the visible luxury of the yacht, but they directly influence whether that luxury can be delivered consistently.


When the design works, much of its success becomes invisible. The tender launches when required. Crew move through the yacht without interrupting guests. The bridge team can see clearly, dim the space efficiently and retain access to essential equipment if an integrated system fails. Engineers can reach what must be maintained, and future captains can understand the vessel without dismantling someone else’s highly personalised solution.


The owner does not need to hear why an activity cannot happen, why a system is difficult to operate or why the crew must compensate for a design decision made years earlier. The yacht simply works.


That is the difference between delivering a finished vessel and delivering one that is ready for real life.


The most effective operational decisions may never be consciously noticed by the owner. What will be noticed is a yacht that does what was promised, supported by a crew able to provide the experience it was designed to create.


Operational experience is most valuable before a superyacht’s key decisions are fixed, when practical knowledge can still shape how the vessel will work from day one.
